From Proto-Indo-European *strow-mo-s, *srowmos, which is derived from Proto-Indo-European *srew- (“to flow”). Cognate with Lithuanian srovė (“current, stream, flow”), Ancient Greek ῥεῦμα (rheûma, “stream, flow”).
