From Proto-Indo-European *déh₂itis (“time, period”), from *deh₂y- (“to divide, part”), or from Proto-Indo-European *dīti- (“time, period”), from *dī- (“time”). Cognate with Old Armenian տի (ti, “age, year, day, time”), and perhaps to Kurdish dem (“time”).
