From Proto-Indo-European *Hyeh₂ǵ-nós, from *Hyeh₂ǵ- (to sacrifice, worship). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἁγνός (hagnós, pure, holy), Proto-Italic *jagjūnos (whence Latin ieiunus (fasting, abstinent)).
