From Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰáynas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéy-no-s, from *bʰey- (“bee”) + *-nos. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *bijō, *biniz (“bee”), Latin fucus (“drone”), Proto-Celtic *bekos (“bee”) (whence Old Irish beach), Lithuanian bitė (“bee”).
