From Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰáynas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéy-no-s, from *bʰey- (bee) + *-nos. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *bijō, *biniz (bee), Latin fucus (drone), Proto-Celtic *bekos (bee) (whence Old Irish beach), Lithuanian bitė (bee).
