Proto-Mon-Khmer
Etymology
- Proto-Mon-Khmer: *luŋ(h) ~ *luuŋh ~ *ləŋ(h) (Shorto, 2006, #724)
Proto-Mon-Khmer *d₂lu(u)ŋ ~ *d₂l(u)əŋ (“boat”) possibly derives from this root. Also, Proto-Mon-Khmer *ruŋh (“hole”), as well as Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁luŋ ~ *t₁luuŋ ~ *t₁luəŋ (“throat”), may be related (Sidwell, 2006).
See also Burmese လှိုင်း (hluing:, “uneven surface”) and Mizo lawng (“to take out the heart of a wild plantain tree”) (Schuessler, 2007).
