Proto-Samic
Etymology
From Proto-Finno-Ugric *uwa (“current, flow”). Cognates include Finnish vuo (“current”). The word is slightly irregular; **ovē- would be expected. Aikio (2006) suggests that dissimilation with the word-medial *-v- has taken place.
Descendants
- Western Samic:
- Northern Sami: avvit
