Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *g(e)id-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰidʰ-. Cognate with Lithuanian geĩsti (“desire”), Latvian gàidît (“wait”), Old Prussian gēide (“they are waiting”), Old High German gīt (“avarice”).
