Proto-Slavic
Etymology
From Latin Rōma. The substitution of ō with *i is enigmatic; many implausible propositions were made. The source was probably Germanic; it is possible to think of a back-formation from *rimьskъ, from a reflex of Proto-Germanic *Rūmiskaz with umlaut.
