Etymology

Of onomatopoeic/expressive origin, possibly continuing Proto-Indo-European *bʰrew-. Phonetically similar to Lithuanian bráuti (to press, to push) and to various lemmas referring to seething, brewing, e.g. Proto-Germanic *brewwaną (to brew), Proto-Celtic *brutus (fermentation, heat), Thracian βρῦτος (sort of broth, beer), Latin defrūtum (syrup, compote).
