Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *debelas, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeb-e-lo-s, from *dʰeb- (“fat, heavy, thick”); about the suffix, compare *tęželъ and *veselъ. Cognate with Latvian depsis (“small, fat boy”), Old Prussian debīkan, debica (“big”), Proto-Germanic *dapraz.
