From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gaʔi-, from Proto-Indo-European *g⁽ʷ⁾eHi-, from g⁽ʷ⁾eH- (to sing). Cognate with Latvian dziêdât, Lithuanian giedóti, Sanskrit गायति (gā́yati, to sing).
