From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gaʔi-, from Proto-Indo-European *g⁽ʷ⁾eHi-, from g⁽ʷ⁾eH- (“to sing”). Cognate with Latvian dziêdât, Lithuanian giedóti, Sanskrit गायति (gā́yati, “to sing”).
