Cognate with Latin gluttiō, glūtiō (“to devour”), more distantly with Old Armenian կլանեմ (klanem, “to devour”), Old Irish gelid (“to devour, to eat up”).
- Derksen: From Proto-Indo-European *glut-, from *glewt-.
- Chernykh: From Proto-Indo-European *gel- or *gʷel-.
