Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Most likely formed from the 0-grade of Pre-Slavic *kerti (“to peck, to cut, to burrow”) + *-ъtъ, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to cut off, to turn”). If correct, then cognates include Proto-Germanic *hreudaną (“to decorate, to peck”), Lithuanian kráuti (“to pile”), Latvian kraũt (“to load, to pile”).
