Etymology
From *ma / *mě (mā / mē) (“negation”) + *klenъ.
- Compare same prefix in Slovene, Serbo-Croatian macesen, matik, etc.
- Compare parallel forms with other prefixes *ne, *pa-: Russian неклён (nekljón) and паклён (pakljón), Czech neklen, Polish nieklon, Bulgarian неклен (neklen), etc.
Unlikely from Proto-Indo-European *māko-kleno-s with cognates Latin mactō, Ancient Greek (Doric) μᾱκων (mākōn), Serbo-Croatian ма̏к.
