Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *nítis, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)nh₁itis, from *(s)neh₁- (“to spin, sew”). Cognate with Latvian nĩts (“(warp) thread”), Lithuanian nýtis (“(warp) thread”).
