Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *plútas, from Proto-Indo-European *plutós, from *plew- (“to fly”). Equivalent to the 0-grade of pre-Slavic *pelti (“to fold, to flow”) + *-ъtъ. Cognate with Latvian pluts (“raft, ferry”) (Possibly a borrowing from Slavic).
