Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Vasmer and V. Maček (Etymologický slovník jazyka českého a slovenského, 1957) suggest relation with Proto-Slavic *prǫdъ (“bank, stream”), ultimately descendant from *(s)prend- (“to sprint”), with the original meaning being shoot, sprout of a tree. The devoicing of -d- is problematic, though. It possible that the voiceless form was influenced by Germanic (cf. Proto-Germanic *sprutô) or by other Slavic words with close meaning and pronunciation (e.g. Proto-Slavic *prytь (“outbreak”)).
