Proto-Slavic
Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *smirˀdēˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *smerd-. Cognate with Lithuanian smirdė́ti, 1sg. smìrdžiu, 3sg. smìrdi, Latvian smir̂dêt. Probably cognate with Latin merda (“shit”). Possibly cognate with Ancient Greek σμόρδωνες (smórdōnes, pl.), glossed as "skunks" in Chernykh but as "tails" in Vasmer as well as in Rix (LIV), who denies the connection on semantic grounds. Per Derksen, the acute accent on the root stems from Winter's law.
