From Proto-Indo-European *tetḱ-dʰlo-, from *tetḱ-. Morphologically *tes- + *-slo (“instrumental suffix”) or *tes- + *-sla.
Cognate with Old Norse þexla (“axe”), Old High German dehsala (“axe, adze”).
