From Proto-Balto-Slavic *waśka, from Proto-Indo-European *woḱs-ko-m? (Derksen) or *woks- (Černyx).
Baltic cognates include Lithuanian vãškas (“wax”), Latvian vasks (“wax”).
Indo-European cognates include Proto-Germanic *wahsą (“wax”), unlikely Ancient Greek ἰξός (ixós).
