From Middle High German rede, from Old High German redia, radia (“speech, view, opinion”), from Proto-Germanic *raþjǭ, *raþjō (“accountability, speech”); from the same root as reden (“to talk, to speak”). Cognate with Latin ratiō (“account, reason, proof”) and English rede (“counsel”).
