German
Etymology
reißen + Brett. Compare also English write (“to inscribe, engrave, imprint”) + board. The older meaning of reißen refers to the consequences of using a tool for engraving or drawing, causing little cracks on a surface of choice, which, among other things, could also have been used as means of writing.
