From Middle High German scharlach, backformation from northern Middle High German scharlachen, from Middle Dutch scarlaken, alteration (based on Middle Dutch laken = German Laken) of older *scarlaten (early modern Dutch schaerlaten, southern Middle High German scharlāt), from Old French escarlate, from Persian سقرلاط (saqerlât), from Latin sigillātum.
