From Middle High German schīze, from Proto-Germanic *skītaz, *skitiz, from Proto-Indo-European *skei-d- (“to part”). Germanic cognates include English shit, German Low German Schiet, Dutch schijt, Frisian skyt, Swedish skit. Low German cognates sometimes used in standard German are Schiet and Schitte.
