From Middle High German swarte, Old High German *swarta. Cognate with Middle English sward, West Frisian swarde, Old Norse svǫrðr, Old English sweard, Danish jord-, Dutch zwoord, English sward, Gothic *𐍃𐍅𐌰𐍂𐌳𐌿𐍃 (*swardus).[1]
