From Arabic سِرَانْدِيب (sirāndīb), from Persian سراندیپ (serândip), from Pali Sīhaḷadīpa and Sanskrit सिंहलद्वीप (siṃhaladvīpa, “island of the Sinhala people”). See Sīhaḷa (“Sri Lanka”), dīpa (“island”) in Pali; and सिंहल (siṃhala, “Sri Lanka”), द्वीप (dvīpa, “island”) in Sanskrit.
