From Middle English Spynx, from Ancient Greek Σφίγξ (Sphínx), perhaps from σφίγγω (sphíngō, “bind tightly, to strangle”). The appurtenance of Egyptian
(šzp, “image, statue, sphinx”) or
(šzp-ꜥnḫ, “living image”) remains unclear.
