Spiegel (“mirror”) + Ei (“egg”). Probably a loan translation of earlier French œuf miroir, œuf au miroir, possibly through Dutch spiegelei.

Usage notes
- Fried eggs are commonly served sunny side up in German-speaking Europe. The contrary may be specified as gewendetes Spiegelei or umgedrehtes Spiegelei. There is no terminology for over easy, over medium, etc.
