Thìn
Vietnamese
Etymology
Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 辰 (“fifth Earthly Branch”; SV: thần). Some dictionaries (such as Thiều Chửu's) consider it as Sino-Vietnamese, but Thìn's /-in/ is unlikely to be a Sino-Vietnamese rhyme, compared to the likely one /-ən/ in thần. See also Tí, Mẹo, Ngọ, Mùi.
Pronunciation
- (Hà Nội) IPA(key): [tʰin˨˩]
- (Huế) IPA(key): [tʰin˦˩]
- (Hồ Chí Minh City) IPA(key): [tʰɨn˨˩]
