from Proto-Germanic *Tīwas dagaz (“Tuesday”, literally “Tiw's Day”), from *Tīwaz (“Tyr, god of war”) + *dagaz (“day”). This was a Germanic interpretation of Latin dies Martis, itself a translation of Ancient Greek Ἄρεως ἡμέρα (Áreōs hēméra) (interpretatio romana).
