Weihnachtsmann
German
Etymology
From Weihnachten (“Christmas”) + Mann (“man”).
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈvaɪ̯.naxts.ˌman/
Audio (file)
Noun
Weihnachtsmann m (genitive Weihnachtsmanns or Weihnachtsmannes, plural Weihnachtsmänner)
Usage notes
- To many German-speakers, the Weihnachtsmann is a non-native, Anglo-Saxon figure, occasionally even a resented one. This feeling is met with particularly in those regions where children traditionally receive their Christmas presents from the Christkind.
