Zonk
See also: zonk
Luxembourgish
Etymology
From Middle High German zūn, from Old High German zūn, from Proto-Germanic *tūną. Since Luxembourgish velarises Middle High German -ūn- only in open syllables, the expected nominative form would be *Zaun. The form Zonk must be a backformation from the regular dative singular *Zong (obsolete). The expected plural is *Zéng, but the final -k was generalised from the singular; perhaps to avoid homophony with zéng (“ten”). Cognate with German Zaun, Dutch tuin, English town, Icelandic tún.
