From French acétylène, coined by French chemist Marcellin Berthelot, from acetyl, from Latin acētum (“vinegar”) (from aceō (“to be sour”), from Proto-Indo-European *aḱ- (“sharp”)) + Ancient Greek ὕλη (húlē, “substance”) (from Proto-Indo-European *sew- (“juice, liquid”)).
