Usage notes
- When used in specifying a year, this term is normally used with the word alku (“beginning”). Sometimes possessive suffix -mme (“our”) is added:
- ennen ajanlaskun alkua
- before the Common Era; (lit.) before the beginning of the Common Era
- jälkeen ajanlaskumme alun
- of the Common Era; (lit.) after the beginning of our Common Era
- ennen ajanlaskun alkua
- The traditional and still more common way of differentiating between the years before and of the Common Era is to refer to the birth of Christ with ennen Kristusta (“before Christ”) or jälkeen Kristuksen (“anno Domini, lit. after Christ”).
