From Old Portuguese açougue (13th century), from Arabic اَلسُّوق (as-sūq, “the market, the souq”),[1] from Aramaic שוקא or ܫܘܩܐ (šūqā’, “street, market”), from Akkadian 𒋻 (sūqu, “street”), from 𒊓𒀀𒆪 (sāqu, “narrow”). Cognate with Portuguese açougue, Spanish zoco and Maltese suq. Doublet of alcouce.
