Borrowed from Occitan (Gascon) berret (“cap”), from Medieval Latin birretum, from Late Latin birrus (“large hooded cloak”), from Gaulish birrus (“short cloak”), from Proto-Celtic *birros (“short”) (compare Welsh byrr, Middle Irish berr). Compare biretta.
