Etymology
From Proto-Turkic *böri, compare Old Turkic [script needed] (böri), Yakut бөрө (börö), Turkmen bȫrü.
Sometimes claimed to be an Iranian word, although Sergei Starostin argues against this. Corroborating this, Vasily I. Abaev elaborates that the East Iranian form itself is most likely borrowed from a Turkic source.[1] The word is not found in any other Indo-European language.[2]
Compare also Russian бирюк (birjuk, “lone wolf, loner”) (see Аникин 128-129)[3]
