Etymology

From Medieval Latin bombacium, Byzantine Greek βαμβάκιον (bambákion), from either Ancient Greek βάμβαξ (bámbax, cotton) or Ancient Greek βόμβυξ (bómbux, silk-worm), whose ultimate origin is unknown. Compare Greek βαμβάκι (vamváki), Venetian bonbaxo, Middle Persian pmbk' (pambag).
