Etymology
From Medieval Latin bombacium, Byzantine Greek βαμβάκιον (bambákion), from either Ancient Greek βάμβαξ (bámbax, “cotton”) or Ancient Greek βόμβυξ (bómbux, “silk-worm”), whose ultimate origin is unknown. Compare Greek βαμβάκι (vamváki), Venetian bonbaxo, Middle Persian pmbk' (pambag).
