From a Vulgar Latin *bataclum, syncope of *bat(t)uaculum, from Latin battuō, battuere (“I beat, clap”). Compare Spanish badajo, French batail, Catalan batall, Portuguese badalo, Venetian batocio, Sardinian batazu. See also the doublet battaglio.
