Probably borrowed from Old Occitan biais, of uncertain origin. Possibly via Vulgar Latin *bigassius from Ancient Greek ἐπικάρσιος (epikársios, athwart), from ἐπί (epí, upon) + κάρσιος (kársios, oblique), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (to cut).
