Etymology

Borrowed from German, more specifically from Austro-Bavarian. Compare Middle High German zeche.[1]

Pronunciation
  • IPA(key): [ˈt͡seː] ((if it has no suffix or if its suffix starts with a consonant, e.g. céhnek)
  • IPA(key): [ˈt͡seːɦ] (in inflected forms when followed by a vowel, e.g. céhek)
  • IPA(key): [ˈt͡seːx] (another pronunciation variant, regardless of any subsequent sounds)[2]

Declension

The singular instrumental and translative case may differ depending on the dialect. When the word is pronounced with a silent H, they are céhvel and céhvé, respectively, but for speakers who pronounce the H, the corresponding forms will be céhhel and céhhé.[3]
