From a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia *calapacceu (compare Catalan carabassa). Or, possibly from Arabic قَرْعَة يَابِسَة (qarʿa yābisa, “dry gourd”), which is from Persian خربزه (xarboza, xarboze, “melon”).
