From camp, or from Old Occitan campanha, from Late Latin campānia, from campāneus, from Latin campus; however the date of first attestation was relatively late, in 1523[1] (it may have been influenced by similar words in other languages; unlike them, however, the Catalan word does not have the sense of "open countryside").
