Origin uncertain; probably of Angloromani origin. Compare Romani chavi (“male child”) or chavo, shavo (“female child”), chal (“boy”), chavvy (“mate, friend”), compare Swedish tjej; possible cognate with Spanish chaval, German Chabo. See also charva.
