From Middle French chirurgien, from Old French cirurgiien (see also Old French surgien, inherited through Vulgar Latin), or simply formed from the root of chirurgie, borrowed from French chirurgia, from chirurgus, from Ancient Greek χειρουργός (kheirourgós).
