From Old French çuete, diminutive of choë, cauwe, from Vulgar Latin *cawa or from Old Dutch *kāwa ‘jackdaw’ (compare Dutch kauw, English chough), from Proto-Germanic *kahwō, from Proto-Indo-European *geh₁(i)- ‘sing’.
