From Proto-Slavic *xudъ (“bad”). Cognate with Lower Sorbian chudy, Upper Sorbian chudy (“poor”), Polish chudy (“thin, lean”), Old Church Slavonic хоудъ (xudŭ), and Russian худо́й (xudój).
