Etymology

From Italian cippollino (“a little onion”), from cipolla (“onion”) (compare English cibol). So called because its veins consist, like onions, of different strata, one lying upon another.

  1. (mineralogy) A whitish marble from Rome, containing pale greenish zones. It consists of calcium carbonate, with zones and cloudings of talc.
