From a Vulgar Latin root *cytola, from a derivative of Ancient Greek ϰάτυλος (kátulos, “seashell”), or perhaps from an alteration of Latin cotyla (“unit of capacity”), from Ancient Greek κοτυλος (kotulos, “pan”); compare Italian ciotola.
