From Middle English colmose, collemase, from Old English colmāse (“coalmouse”), from Proto-Germanic *kulamaisǭ, equivalent to coal + (tit)mouse. Cognate with Saterland Frisian Koolmeeske, Dutch koolmees, German Low German Kohlmeeske, German Kohlmeise.
